Wellington Airport awards community volunteers

Wellington Airport, in association with The Community Trust of Wellington, awarded the Supreme Award for voluntary work in the community to Mana Recovery at the 2011 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

Mana Recovery provides social and employment outcomes for people with mental health needs in the Wellington and Porirua region based on respect and empowerment. The activities are centre around environmental sustainability and resource recovery.

Along with giving new life to discarded goods at the Trash Palace shop, Mana Recovery educates the community on sustainability through the education centre, and the reduce reuse recycle programme it runs with local schools Last year over 700 tonnes of material were diverted from landfill, and they are tracking to divert over 1400 tonnes this year.

"Volunteers are at the heart of our community and Wellington Airport proudly support and greatly value the service of these individuals and organisations. These awards give volunteers the recognition they really deserve and are an inspiration to others," said John Howarth acting CEO of Wellington Airport.

Wellington Airport also awarded the Wild at Heart Spirit Awards to five students from local high schools. The Spirit Awards recognise and celebrate students who believe in the importance of community and demonstrate self-motivation in their service to the community and a contribution to their college. The recipients receive a $1,500 scholarship towards furthering their education.

The Airport has been involved with The Community Awards for eight years. The awards begin at the municipal level with the greater Wellington region's five councils awarding volunteer organisations in their local community under the following categories: Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Education and Youth Development.

The finalists from each category and region then go forward for the overall award in their category and the Supreme Award. These are announced at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. Mana Recovery receive an all expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Awards to be held in Ashburton in March 2012. The TrustPower National Community Awards started in 2000.

This year the event was hosted in the new terminal development, The Rock, which has won 11 awards including the Inside Award for Transport at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona.

Wellington Airport is also proud to sponsor other community organisations and events such as Life Flight Trust, The International Arts Festival, Wellington High Performance Aquatic, Life Flight Trust, Maranui and Worser Bay Surf Lifesaving Clubs and the Community Service Award at the Wellingtonian of the Year Awards.

* Hutt City- Pomare Community House
* Upper Hutt - Wellington Speedway Society
