Banks Peninsula Zone Committee Meeting

The Canterbury Water Banks Peninsula Zone Committee will meet for the second time on Tuesday, 15 November, in Akaroa.

At the meeting the committee will review its work-plan for the coming months. The work-plan highlights upcoming meeting topics and outlines the fieldtrips and community engagement the committee will undertake.

The committee will then receive presentations from Environment Canterbury on legislation and plans and how these fit with Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The committee will also receive presentations on Christchurch City Council’s climate and biodiversity strategies and begin to discuss priority funding areas for Immediate Steps biodiversity funding.

The Banks Peninsula water management zone committee was officially launched in September to begin addressing local water issues using the goals and methods developed via the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month to gather information about the region and its water resource with the goal of developing a Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for the management of the region's water.

A number of field trips are also planned so members can visit areas of significance and meet with community members. In addition, the committee will hold public meetings to hear the community’s feedback on water issues in the zone.

The first public engagement meetings are scheduled for late November and early December around the zone. The meetings will be advertised in local papers and details can be found at www.ecan.govt.nz/canterburywater.

The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee features five community members as well as four Rūnanga representatives and two from council.

The community members are Pam Richardson, Yvette Couch-Lewis, Stephen Lowndes, Richard Simpson and Kevin Simcock. The Rūnanga appointees are Iaean Cranwell, June Swindells, Elliot Briggs and Pere Tainui. The two Council representatives are Environment Canterbury Commissioner Donald Couch and Christchurch City Councillor Claudia Reid.
