Hastings: Puketapu Park playground open for business

November 16, 2011

Puketapu Park playground, open for business

Puketapu Park has received a makeover with the installation of a new children's playground.

The park was identified in Council's Play Strategy, as a priority for a new playground, due to the high proportion of children living in the area aged 15 or under. During the development of the playground, particular consideration was given to reflect the special landscape character of the area and complement the natural recreational activities provided for in the settlement.

Following community consultation, Council has installed a tandem flying fox, spinning Roktopus tyre swing, four person see-saw and junior and adult swings. One of the standout features is the natural timber theme used throughout the playground, in keeping with the rural nature of the reserve.

As well as the playground, Council has extended the carpark, and added new footpaths and seating to increase the use and enjoyment of the park.

As part of the Essences of Hastings mural project, Council will commission a new artwork to be painted on the toilet block, illustrating the history of dinosaurs in Hawke's Bay. The theme for the mural is to be based on the late Councillor Deborah Turner's vision to acknowledge the dinosaur discoveries made in the hills of Hawke's Bay by the renowned paleontologist, Joan Wiffen.

Council believes the community will be delighted with their new, improved park and encourages everyone to take a drive into the country to experience our latest 'park makeover'.
