Police across Wellington District significantly disrupt organised criminals

Police across the Wellington District have disrupted organised criminals as part of an ongoing commitment to reducing the harm caused by illegal drugs.

Officer in charge of the Wellington District Covert Operations Group Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson says 17 people have been arrested as part of the operation this week and face a variety of charges, including supply of methamphetamine and cannabis, possession of methamphetamine, cannabis, ecstasy and LSD, possession of drug utensils, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

"What was of real concern to us again was the fact we recovered a loaded shotgun and other firearms, including a stun gun at addresses in Tawa and Paraparaumu. A quantity of ammunition was also recovered."

He says, "Drugs and firearms are a lethal cocktail and this once again demonstrates the dangers of organised crime within the community. The combination of weapons and drugs pose a significant risk to Police and our people.”

Detective Inspector Thomson says Police also recovered more than $23,000 cash at addresses in Paraparaumu, Porirua, Tawa and Wellington city and quantities of methamphetamine, cannabis, ecstasy, LSD and valium.

"We are committed to the fight against drugs and organised crime. Our operation this week should send a clear message to drug dealers and organised criminals across the District that they can expect a visit from us soon."

A dozen search warrants were executed across Otaki, Paraparaumu, Porirua, Tawa, Johnsonville, Newlands, Strathmore and central Wellington. Two referrals were made to Child, Youth and Family at a Paraparaumu address.

The 17 people arrested face numerous firearms and drug charges and will be appearing in the Porirua and Wellington District Courts within the next week.
