Karikari Peninsula Fire

Karikari Peninsula Fire

Northland Police are now treating the fire on Karikari Peninsula, that occurred on November 30, as arson.

Detective Inspector Karyn Malthus, Northland Police Crime Manager, states that Police have completed a detailed scene examination and any natural cause of the fire has been eliminated.

Whilst Police will not comment any further on the cause of the fire, Ms Malthus says they are now working hard to identify those people who had been in that particular area of the peninsula that afternoon and are seeking the community's help.

The area is a secluded piece of private Maori land with restricted access. However, the gate was left unlocked on the day of the fire allowing unrestricted access.

Police have spoken to a number of local residents who have been helpful, but urge any others, who were present in that area on the afternoon of November 30, or know of anyone who was in the area to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact the Detective Sergeant Trevor Beatson, Kaitaia Police on 09 408 6154 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
