Temporary service centre opens in Akaroa

A temporary Akaroa Service Centre has opened next to the Akaroa Sports Complex in Rue Jolie this morning (Wednesday 21 December).

The temporary facility, which is in the sports pavilion carpark at the Akaroa Recreation Ground, 28 Rue Jolie, opened at 9am today following the closure of Akaroa Service Centre last Friday. It will be open from 9am-5pm on weekdays, except for statutory holidays, and the public will be able to access all the usual services.

Christchurch City Council closed Akaroa Service Centre after receiving the results of a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE). Engineers have recommended the building needs earthquake repairs and strengthening.

General Manager Public Affairs Lydia Aydon says transactions will be processed manually until the New Year because there are currently some IT limitations.

“We are aware of the facility’s importance to the local community and we are therefore pleased to be able to set up a temporary facility in the township. We would just ask for some understanding from customers until we are able to get our systems completely up and running.”

As the service centre facility is a heritage building all recommendations for repair and earthquake strengthening will go to Council for approval. There is currently no timeframe for when this will occur.
