Police urge recording serial numbers of electronic gifts this Christmas

Police across the Wellington District are urging people to record serial numbers of expensive electronic gifts given this Christmas.

Wellington Police District spokesperson Senior Sergeant Mark Buttar says those expecting electronic gifts on Sunday should make a note of the serial numbers and record them online at the Operation SNAP website.

"Launched at the end of April this year, Operation SNAP enables anyone to record serial numbers and other unique identifying details of their valuable goods on an electronic database. The website is a community partnership designed to reduce property offending and deter property theft."

Senior Sergeant Buttar says burglars are less likely to steal items that are permanently marked or have had their serial numbers recorded because they are hard to sell due to the fact they can be identified.

"We want everyone to have a very safe and merry Christmas this year and want people to protect themselves and their properties to avoid becoming a victim of a theft or burglary. Registering your valuable goods on the Operation SNAP website is one way to discourage criminals taking your property and has a better chance of criminals being caught if they handle or on-sell identifiable goods."
