Auckland Transport awards contract for final stage of Glenfield Road upgrade

Auckland Transport has awarded an $11.5 million contract to Fulton Hogan to carry out work on the fourth and final stage of the Glenfield Road upgrade.

Work on the $40 million Glenfield Road upgrade is due to begin early in February.

Glenfield Road is a major arterial road serving the north of the city with more than 30,000 vehicles using it each day. Auckland Transport estimates that this figure will rise by approximately 3% per year.

The project, which began under the former North Shore City Council, aims to increase traffic capacity, ease congestion and improve pedestrian and cycle safety. Work has been undertaken in four stages in order to minimise disruption to residents and commuters.

Stage four is the final link in the upgrade which will focus on the section of Glenfield Road between James Street (South) and Sunset Road. It will release all of the benefits from the different stages of the project and will join up to future improvements on Albany Highway.

The final stage will take approximately two years to complete and will involve the following:

• Widening of Glenfield Road to provide two lanes in each direction
• Changes to the Wairau/Glenfield Road intersection
• Road resurfacing
• Safer crossing points for pedestrians with tactile markings for those with a visual impairment
• Widening of footpaths
• 1.5m wide on-road cycle lanes in both directions
• New raised, planted and flush painted medians to improve safety
• Indented bus bays
• Bus priority measures at intersections to improve travel times
• Landscaping and retaining walls

Diversions will be in place during the construction period but Auckland Transport will make every effort to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum. Details will be advised in advance to residents and commuters.

The first stage of the Glenfield Road upgrade concentrated on the Sunset/Glenfield road intersection. Priorities were to increase vehicle capacity, add additional lanes and improve underground services.

Stage two saw improvements to the section between Bentley Ave and Camrose Place which included:

• The installation of two lanes in each direction
• The installation of raised planted medians
• Intersection upgrades
• New on-road cycle lanes
• Widening of footpaths
• Undergrounding of utility services
• Road surface upgrades

During stage three, the section of Glenfield Road between Camrose Place and James Street (south) was widened to provide two lanes in each direction. The Hogan/Manuka Road intersection was also upgraded.
