Listen up – we need your help!

Are you passionate about helping others with their reading skills? Auckland Libraries is again running its popular ‘Repeat Read Aloud’ programme for adults this year and is in need of volunteers to help deliver it.

Repeat Read Aloud is a collaboration between Auckland Libraries New Lynn, Waitakere Central and Ranui libraries and Culture Company Reading 4U.

“Communication, community and cultural literacy are core drivers for this project and, in the spirit of community, we work closely with volunteers to make this free programme happen,” says Cecilia Lindsay, programme coordinator for the Culture Company Reading 4U.

“Repeat Read Aloud helps migrants improve their listening skills and pronunciation which, in turn, gives them the confidence they need to communicate.

“The programme also introduces new Aucklanders to the range of services and valuable resources that are offered by Auckland Libraries and available to them on an ongoing basis,” she says.

Repeat Read Aloud runs for two hours, twice a week, for six weeks during each school term. It covers English language skills and promotes intercultural communication. It is also a great way of strengthening the social and cultural fabric of local communities.
At the end of each term volunteers and course participants can share their stories and experiences of learning from each other. These are then published by the group.
If you are passionate about helping migrants become part of your local community and learn English, please contact Culture Company Reading 4U volunteer co-ordinators:
• Cecilia for Waitakere Central Library on 09 421 1811 or 021 778 936
• New Lynn Library on 09 827 3640
The course is also offered at Ranui Library and we are inviting expressions of interest from people who would like to take part in the course. For Ranui inquiries please contact Culture Company Reading 4U volunteer coordinator Kiran on 09 833 5861.
All programmes begin on 31 January 2012.
