Ohura Museum ready for a big move

Press release for Ohura Museum – For immediate release – 4 Feb 2012

Ohura Museum ready for a big move

A public meeting to discuss the proposals will be held on Wednesday Feb 15th at 6.00pm in the community hall. The meeting will also elect a formal committee to oversee the future of the Museum.

The meeting will be chaired by Marion Gillard, local Councillor for Ohura Ward.

This tiny Museum in the King Country west of Taumarunui is expecting to remove all the items, repair and rewire the building then replace items in new display areas. A major grant is being sought to complete the work. Massey University (Museum dept) have agreed to assist with the new exhibition space.

Wherever possible the work will be undertaken by local professionals and a tender process is already in progress.

During the last year assistance has also been provided by Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum, to guide the interim committee in re-planning the direction and objectives of the Museum.

The Ohura Museum was first incorporated in 1976, the land and buildings were donated by a local company and more than 1000 items have been both acquired and donated over the years. These include historical objects and papers relating to the history of Ohura including Maori artefacts, mining, milling, and communications.

Some of the exhibits are rare agricultural items including tractors, machinery and many traditional implements providing a true accolade to the people who made this rural area so unique.
