Half of city bylaws to be reviewed

Eight of the city’s 15 bylaws will be reviewed this year, with the public invited to have their say on proposed changes to each of the city’s local laws in the spotlight.

Council’s Strategy and Policy Committee yesterday (22 February) gave the green light for planned reviews to progress, with statements of proposal detailing changes to the bylaws to be prepared ahead of public consultation on them.

A review of the cemeteries and crematorium 2008 bylaw is presently underway, with public feedback on the proposed changes, including provision for natural burials at Hamilton Park Cemetery, being sought from 29 February. A public meeting will be held on 5 March from 11am at Council.

Other reviews being carried out this year include Traffic, Skating, Parks, Domains and Reserves, Cultural Recreation and Facilities, and Speed Limits. These reviews will take place throughout the year, and public input will be sought on all throughout the review process.

The Solid Waste Bylaw review is already underway, with public submissions received and hearings held earlier this month.

Commenting, Committee Chairperson Maria Westphal says: “It’s important, as well as being required, that the city’s bylaws are reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our city.

“I invite the public to connect in with those bylaws which interest or impact on them, and let us know what they think of proposed changes and any others which might be needed to ensure they are relevant for the city into the future.”
