Community feedback sought on council’s Older Persons Policy

ROTORUA 28.02.12: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is reviewing its Older Persons Policy to ensure it meets the purpose it was originally established for.

RDC community services officer Carole Parker says the purpose of the policy is to support the council’s commitment to being a district which values its older people, promotes their meaningful contribution to the community, and facilitates a positive ageing experience.

“Older people need to feel included in all aspects of the community and in particular engaged in decision-making related to them.

“Our goal is to provide opportunities for older people to be engaged and active in the community, so that they can have opportunities to contribute to planning for the future, and to keep physically and mentally active.”

Consultation will be undertaken with groups and organisations that work with older people in the community, along with individual people who are in the 60 plus age group.

Local residents interested in having input into the Older Persons Policy can contact Carole Parker at Rotorua District Council on 07 351 8115, access a copy through the RDC website www.radc.govt.nz or pick up a brochure, from the RDC Customer Centre, which explains the policy and provides a feedback form.

Submissions close on Friday 30 March, and a draft revised policy is expected to be presented to councillors for their consideration in June 2012.
