Rugby Balls to share Westpac stadium with frisbees, table tennis balls, golf clubs and shuttlecocks at the 2012 Pelorus Trust Stadium Sports Festival.

On Tuesday 6 March, 600 Year Five and Six primary school students from throughout the Wellington region, will descend upon Westpac Stadium to take part in the 9th Annual Pelorus Trust Stadium Sports Festival.

Organised by Sport Wellington, the Pelorus Trust Stadium Sports Festival again aims to expose primary school children to a variety of different sports. This year 54 schools applied to attend the event, of which only 20 spots were available.

An exciting line up of sports will be showcased including Ultimate Frisbee, Table Tennis and Futsal as well as traditional codes such as Cricket, Netball and Rugby League. Lunchtime will see regional and national sporting stars head down to mingle with the kids including members of the Wellington Phoenix and Wellington Firebirds teams.

Since 2004 the Pelorus Trust Stadium Sports Festival has seen over 4000 children take to the hallowed turf of the Westpac Stadium to have a go at sports they might not generally get an opportunity to experience. It is hoped that the students find a sport they enjoy and want to continue with, developing a taste for a variety of sports rather than specialising in one particular code early in life.

The day is a logistical challenge akin to a miniature Olympics with busloads of eager participants arriving to 20 different stations set up within and around Westpac Stadium. Sport Wellington is grateful to the support of local moving company Coolmoves for transporting equipment and to Pak’nSave Kilbirnie for helping to feed the small army of volunteers.

Something special for 2012 will be the Traditional Maori Games (Wellington City Council) component of the event, giving the children an opportunity to participate in Horohopu, a sport that is totally unique to New Zealand .

Proudly supported by Pelorus Trust the event starts at 10am and finishes at 2pm, with a lunch break from between 12.10 – 12.40pm.
