An evening of flood protection at the Stopbank Soiree

Ever wondered exactly what Greater Wellington’s Flood Protection team does to reduce the risk of flooding in the Hutt Valley? Come along to learn more about one of Greater Wellington’s biggest and most critical projects, the Boulcott Hutt stopbank.

The $11.4 million stopbank closes the gap in the Hutt River flood defences between Connolly Street and Fairway Drive. A major failure at this point could result in approximately $1.6 billion worth of damage to the Hutt City central area.

“Residents of the Hutt Valley, and in fact anyone interested in our work, can join us for an evening stroll along the Boulcott Hutt stopbank site,” says Greater Wellington’s Flood Protection manager, Graeme Campbell.

“You will learn about the work we do in the Hutt Valley and other parts of the region, and in particular how we construct an important stopbank such as this. We’ll also have some heavy machinery on-site for a demonstration on the night.”

The project is part of an $80 million upgrade being undertaken across the region by Greater Wellington. Combined with future channel works in the City Centre reach area, it will bring the level of protection in the Hutt CBD and central residential area up to a 1-in-440 year return period flood standard.
