Farewell to the Godwits

Southshore Spit Reserve, South New Brighton
A full complement of Christchurch’s much-loved visitors, the bar-tailed Godwits, will embark on their epic journey back to Alaska. Traditionally, at the end of each summer, Christchurch residents have the opportunity to bid farewell to the Godwits (kuaka) at a brief and informative ceremony before they head back to their Alaskan breeding grounds. The return path takes several weeks with stopovers around China’s Yellow Sea, the Korean Peninsula and Japan, before the home-run crossing of the Bering Sea to Alaska.

Experience the world and celebrate cultural diversity at Culture Galore! Be entertained with more than 50 cultural performances and demonstrations, a huge variety of ethnic foods, art and crafts for sale and loads of fun activities for the whole family. Tempt your senses and delight your taste buds with the huge array of exotic smells and flavours to sample and purchase. Children’s activities include a bouncy castle, Plains FM recording booth, baseball batting cage, origami, stone and soap carving and face painting. BYO rug or chairs and make a day of it. Limited parking is available.
