Coastguard North Shore’s Golf Day Fundraiser A Success

Coastguard North Shore has hailed its inaugural golf day fundraiser a success after raising over $15,000 thanks to the support of the local community and businesses.

Sixteen teams teed off on 18 holes on Friday 17 February at the North Shore Golf Course with the team from Precision Automobiles taking out the top honours.

The new CEO of Coastguard Northern Region, David Tommas, took the prize for Longest Drive and Angus Swainson and Peter Lawrence both won the Nearest the Pin category.

Coastguard North Shore’s President Mark Raubenheimer says the funds raised from the Golf Day will go towards a new rescue vessel for the unit with North Shore Rescue due for replacement in four years.

“In spite of the temperamental weather, the unit is thrilled at how successful the Golf Day has been. The funds raised surpassed our expectations given it was the first time we have held the event and it will make a significant contribution towards a new rescue vessel for our volunteers.”

In addition to the competition on the green, a fundraising auction MC’d by New Zealand rugby legend Eric Rush was also held. Prizes up for bidding included a Macrocapa sculpture, hand crafted Kwila table and a night out with the All Blacks.

Coastguard’s North Shore unit relies heavily on public support and funding as well as the dedication of its selfless and hardworking volunteers to fulfil its mantra of ‘saving Lives at sea’. The funds raised from the fundraising event will ultimately help the unit to successfully achieve this mission.

“The event went without a hitch thanks to the support of our fantastic sponsors including Placemakers, Orcon, Kodak, Precision Automobiles, Browns Bay Markets, Telstra Clear, Burnsco and of course the North Shore Golf Course,” says Mr Raubenheimer.

“We’re really looking forward to even more success and good times for all when we bring the event back next year,” he says.

The Coastguard North Shore unit is one of the busiest units in the country with NZCT North Shore Rescue responding to an average of 260 call outs annually. In addition to patrolling the Hauraki Gulf over the weekends, its volunteers are available to respond to boaties’ calls for assistance 24/7.
