‘Street art’ project brings bus shelter to life

The bus shelter at the intersection of Roy and Manchester Streets by Wellington Zoo has a wild new look, thanks to contemporary local artist and illustrator Bruce Mahalski.

The shelter is the latest in a series of street art projects initiated in July last year, as part of a city-wide campaign to increase safety, reduce tagging and add vibrancy and an element of surprise to the streets of Wellington.

Funding was provided by the Ministry of Justice, as the campaign fits with its STOP strategy (Stop Tagging Our Place).

Mahalski was keen to ensure his mural reflected the local community, appeal to a broad audience and engage children. He visited the Zoo for inspiration, and spoke with some of its staff and neighbouring residents. The shelter now features a melange of wildlife – native greenery and the zoo’s most popular animals.

The momentum for street art and mural projects has really taken off. Not only have the projects reduced tagging and enhanced the look and feel of our streets, they also provide great opportunities for artists to engage with local residents, businesses and youth to develop art works that communities can feel proud of.
