Hamilton Police appeal for information on CBD attack

Hamilton Police appeal for information on CBD attack

Police investigating a serious assault on a man in Hamilton's CBD early this morning are appealing for witnesses as they work to identify those responsible.

Detective Sergeant Ricky Thompson of the Hamilton CIB said Police believe a 20-year-old man was assaulted at the intersection of Hood and Alexandra Streets about 3.30am.

"Calls to the 111 service described a man being attacked by three males and suffering kicks to the head while on the ground.

"Our victim suffered serious head and facial injuries and was taken to Waikato Hospital, the scene was cordoned off and at first light this morning investigators converged on the area where blood could be seen on the ground."

Mr Thompson said that as well as hoping to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who knew the identities of the attackers, detectives would also review CCTV footage taken in the area to see if those responsible could be identified.

"This type of behaviour is unacceptable and will be followed up by Police.

"While Hamilton is generally a safe, family friendly place to come out and enjoy yourselves from time to time these things occur and it is important that the community, not just the Police, send a message that this type of attack will not be tolerated."

Anyone with any information on this morning's attack is asked to contact Detective Garrod Russell of the Hamilton CIB on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
