Community scheme proposal to assist Kairakau flooding woes
A proposal to set up a community scheme to fund flood and seawall repairs and maintenance in Kairakau has met with the approval of today’s Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Corporate and Strategic Committee meeting.
The Kairakau community suffered significant damage in last year’s Easter floods including flooding, erosion of the Mangakuri River banks, loss of a boat launching ramp, and damage to the seawall.
The proposal outlines capital works the scheme would cover, including improving the protection of public land and facilities along the true left bank of the Mangakuri River from flood or wave damage. The scheme’s maintenance work would include tree and vegetation removal and management, river bank works protecting public land and repair and maintenance of the Kairaku seawall.
There are 80 properties within the Kairakau Community, who would pay $100 + GST per year per property through their rates. HBRC will contribute 10% as it does for other schemes that it administers.
The proposal will go to the full council for final approval on March 21.
If the scheme receives full council backing submissions will be called for and a public meeting held in Kairakau to discuss the concept on Saturday 14 April.
