Media Release, for immediate release, Tuesday 20 March 2012

Second Highest Response Ever to Dunedin Community Awards

Locals have got behind their volunteers with 100 groups entered for the TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards.

Entries for the Awards closed on Friday (16 March). The TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards, which recognise and reward volunteers for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community, are run in conjunction with the Dunedin City Council.

TrustPower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville is over the moon at the number of voluntary groups entered for this year’s TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards, which is the second highest total since 2005 which received 101.

We have received 100 entries for 96 voluntary groups and organisations. These entries represent thousands of volunteers who are contributing untold hours to the Dunedin community. It’s wonderful that we now have the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work of these volunteers through the TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards,” says Miss Somerville.

“These volunteers never ask for anything in return; but, it is wonderful that through these awards we can celebrate the fantastic effort being put into this community,” she said.

The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards.

The 2012 TrustPower National Community Awards are being held in March next year.

The entries for the TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards are currently being prepared for judging. The TrustPower Dunedin Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Monday 7 May, to which all entered organisations will be invited.
