Exciting new development for Flaxmere Park set to begin

A transformation of Flaxmere Park will bring enormous benefits to the community.

As part of a major redevelopment of the park, new fitness equipment is to be installed, similar to that which is proving extremely popular in Queens Square.

Health Hawke’s Bay – Te Oranga Hawke’s Bay has been working with Hastings District Council on this joint initiative. Health Hawke’s Bay health promotion coordinator Sue Taaffe says “The aim is to give locals added opportunities to keep fit and have fun using the free, gym–style exercise equipment.”

The redevelopment will also include the installation of a splash pad, similar to the one at Cornwall Park. Additional playground equipment, toilet facilities and walk and cycle paths around the perimeter along with seating, bins and picnic tables will ensure the park takes on a new and modern style.

Community input during the design phase was crucial in ensuring that the park becomes a centre of activity for all the family. The Flaxmere community asked that the park be easily accessible, there were more footpaths and cyclepaths and the final design ensures that the area becomes safer for everyone.

The installation of the new equipment and pathways will require the removal of up to 40 trees. The location of the new facilities will avoid the removal of any trees of significance in the park and many that will be removed have health issues or are in decline. The safety of park users will also be enhanced, as the removal of the trees will ensure better visibility throughout the whole park.

The installation of the new fitness equipment is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with the whole project to be completed by Labour weekend.
