Good progress made on Water of Leith flood works

Contractor Hall Brothers has completed the remaining flood hazard reduction work in Dunedin’s Water of Leith between Cumberland Street and Dundas Street.

The work included widening of the channel near the Brook Street flats, widening of the channel beside the Botanic Gardens car park, and the placement of rock rip-rap below Cumberland Street where the concrete lined channel reverts to natural riverbed.

The remedial work will assist with conveying flood flows down the Leith.

Meanwhile, ORC staff are continuing their discussions with University of Otago officials about the extent and timing of flood works planned for the Leith within the campus area between Leith Street and Forth Street.

The talks are aimed at identifying how much flood protection and riparian enhancement work could be done in 2012/13.

ORC director of engineering and natural hazards Gavin Palmer said good progress was being made on identifying a programme of work in the campus which would fit around other campus development plans and activities.
