Cyclist safety promoted in the Kapiti Coast

Sunday the 1st April 2012 marks the end of daylight savings and with that brings darkness upon us earlier.

Kapiti Police, in partnership with the Kapiti Coast District Council, want to ensure that all our cyclists reduce the possibility of NOT BEING SEEN and encouraging cyclists to GET NOTICED during the hours of darkness. (The legal definition of darkness is ½ hr after sunset or ½hr prior to sunrise or a vehicle or person can not be seen 100metres away).

Good lights and reflectors greatly increase visibility.

Officer in charge of Kapiti Police Senior Sergeant Alasdair Macmillan says from Monday 2nd April, Police will be commencing a campaign targeting cyclists who are in breach of the Road Transport regulations by not using lights and also those who are not wearing helmets.

"The fine for not wearing a helmet, not having a front light and not having a tail light are all $55 each."

KCDC Transport Safety Coordinator Jane Pearson says during the month of April, the Kapiti Observer will be running a series of road safety messages to help keep everyone safe on our roads.

"Keep an eye out for these messages as there will be an opportunity for you to win prizes."
