Drivers Slow to get the Speed Message

A large number of drivers are not heeding the Police warning about a lowered speed tolerance over the holiday period. Nationally, Police are issuing tickets to drivers detected driving any more than 4km over the speed limit, in a concerted effort to keep the holiday road toll down. Traffic Safety Cameras have also been set to issue tickets for this speed.

However, many holiday makers travelling north have not been heeding this message. Inspector Mark Fergus, Waitematā Road Policing Manager says that during a 6 hour period yesterday (23rd December 2012) over 600 cars were photographed exceeding the speed limit in the notorious Dome Valley black-spot.

Inspector Fergus says that the Dome Valley has one of the countries highest crash rates, many of these crashes are related to speed. Police will be heavily targeting this, and other risk areas on the holiday routes north of Auckland, to ensure drivers keep their speed down and complete their journeys safely.

Highway Patrol officers and Traffic Safety cameras will be checking speeds, and issuing tickets to those who fail to keep to the speed limit. "Not all Christmas surprises are good ones, and there are going to be lot of drivers receiving more than late Christmas cards in the mail early next year".
