Tsunami warning for Wellington – stay off beaches and stay tuned to radio for information
Issued at 5.15pm Wednesday 6 February 2013 (Waitangi Day)
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) has issued a National Advisory: Tsunami Potential Threat to New Zealand.
Wellington coastal communities are advised that a tsunami is possible following a magnitude 8.0 earthquake near Vanuatu about 2pm New Zealand time today.
A tsunami has been generated and the first wave may arrive in New Zealand in the areas around North Cape at between 6pm and 7pm today. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Waves may continue for several hours.
People
in coastal areas, including around Wellington,
should:
• Stay off beaches, coastal areas and
estuaries
• Do not go sightseeing
•
Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
• Listen to the radio and TV for updates
• Follow instructions from your local civil
defence authorities.
The Potential Threat applies to
WELLINGTON as well as EAST CAPE, GISBORNE, AUCKLAND EAST,
NEW PLYMOUTH, MILFORD SOUND, NAPIER and WESTPORT.
