Two arrests follow joint welfare fraud investigation

Two people have been arrested following a joint operation between Counties Manukau Police and the Ministry of Social Development.

The two departments have been working together on the operation since the beginning of March.

It targeted a bogus dental practice which is alleged to have been involved in up to $375, 000 of welfare payments being fraudulently obtained.

Detective Inspector Mark Gutry says, “This morning police issued a number of search warrants at an address in Papatoetoe relating to the scam.”

“A male aged 48 and a female aged 51 were arrested and charged with Deception. There are further charges pending.”

The couple will be appearing in the Manukau District Court tomorrow. They will be held at the Manukau Police Station overnight.

The Ministry of Social Development and Police know of all people involved and both departments will continue with their investigation.
