Dalai Lama to be Welcomed

Dalai Lama to be Welcomed

Dunedin, 3 May 2013 – Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull and the Dalai Lama Visit Trust New Zealand announced today that Cr Jinty MacTavish will represent the City by welcoming the Dalai Lama at his public lecture in June.

Mr Cull was originally invited by the Trust to welcome and introduce His Holiness the Dalai Lama but is unavailable due to commitments with LGNZ National Council in Wellington. Deputy Mayor Chris Staynes is also unavailable.

Trust Chairperson Mr Thuten Kesang welcomed Cr MacTavish’s involvement.

“I am delighted the City is welcoming the Dalai Lama and has appointed Cr MacTavish to represent the City in the Mayor’s absence.

“We believe this is a wonderful gesture and we look forward to bringing His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Dunedin on 11 June.”

Mr Cull said he was also very pleased the Trust had agreed to the delegation of Cr MacTavish.

“It is important the City’s welcome recognises the affection and respect with which the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader is regarded in our community,” he said.
