Community Boards Flock to Wanaka

Community Boards Flock to Wanaka

8 May 2013

The New Zealand Community Board Executive Committee (CBEC) conference kicks off tomorrow in Wanaka with about 200 delegates coming together to celebrate great local leadership. (CBEC is a Local Government New Zealand Committee).

The CBEC conference runs until Saturday and has the theme “local communities, local leadership.” It will have a strong accent on the future and aims to motivate and inform delegates in their drive for thriving communities.

The programme is made up of hard-hitting speakers, relevant and educative workshops on topics such as engaging with your community, community readiness for a crisis and updated developments in a sector experiencing significant change. Other draw cards include the Best Practice Awards and the highly valuable networking time. The awards dinner, on Friday, will provide a showcase for successful projects and initiatives from across the country.

CBEC’s Chair, Mick Lester, is excited.

“We have been hard at work putting together a programme that will be interesting, challenging and informative. We all have so much to learn from one another and I am delighted that so many delegates will be taking part in this year’s conference.”

Altogether 116 Community Boards operate in urban and rural areas within local authorities throughout New Zealand. They carry out functions delegated to them by their councils and act as advocates for the best interests of their communities.

The conference is also open to Mayors, Councillors, MPs, community and youth workers, Government agency staff and anyone else interested in making a difference in their community.
