A quiet weekend then a change to westerlies

The coming weekend will be fairly benign on the weather front thanks to a high building across New Zealand.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist commented, "It will be a decent weekend for outdoor plans in eastern places. For western areas south of about Taranaki, the weekend should be more cloudy than fine, with showers from time to time."

A couple of fronts in the westerly flow will bring a bit more snow to some South Island ski fields this weekend, but will spread in enough warmer air to ease the sharp overnight frosts, and bring a thaw to the snow, that has been lingering in some inland valleys.

"Queenstown has struggled to get above a few degrees in the last few days, but is expected to climb into double figures early next week" added Corbett.

The brisk westerly flow will continue across the South Island next week and further north the anticyclone will linger across the North Island bringing mostly settled conditions.
