Short description: Serious Vehicle Crash
Full description:
At 3.40p.m.on 30th June 2013 Emergency Services attended a serious crash on State Highway 6 at the Lumsden North Culvert involving a single vehicle.
A van towing a trailer was traveling south on State Highway 6 and drifted to the left side of the road, which caused the vehicle to collide with the concrete edge of the culvert.
The vehicle has stopped instantly and the force has caused the van to flip over , landing in the culvert on the roof .There was water present in the culvert.
A 32 year old male driver and a 10 year old boy were in the front seats, and an 8 year old girl was in the back seat. The trailer was transporting 5 pig hunting dogs.
Approximately 3 carloads of passers-by assisted in removing the children from the vehicle prior to emergency services arriving. The Fire Service cut the male driver free.
Ambulance transported the male who had serious leg injuries to Dunedin hospital by helicpoter, and the 10 year old boy for observation.
Animal Control attended the scene and secured the dogs, as three became free from the trailer in the crash. All dogs have been recovered.
All persons were wearing seat belts, and this has certainly prevented a fatal crash occurring.
Enquiries are continuing.
