Nomination of new Anglican Bishop

Representatives from throughout the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki have selected a nominee to be the 7th Bishop of Waikato.

The name was the outcome of prayer, discussion, and voting, at an Electoral College that began on Friday evening at Southwell School in Hamilton and concluded late Sunday afternoon.

The college was attended by about 200 representatives of the Anglican Church in Waikato and Taranaki. The gathering at Southwell School is only the first part of a three stage process, during which time the name of the nominee remains confidential.

Part 1:The Waikato Electoral College agrees on a nominee.

Part 2: The nominee's name is forwarded to all of the bishops of the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia for their approval.

Part 3: If the bishops approve then the nominee's name is forwarded to the members of the Anglican Church General Synod - te Hinota Whanui in New Zealand and Polynesia for their sanction by a postal ballot.

The Electoral College was chaired by the Right Rev'd Dr Kelvin Wright, Bishop of Dunedin.

Bishop Kelvin is asking the wider church to pray for the nominee,while the confirmation process continues, as well as the names of all those considered by the electoral college during the weekend.

Once the confirmation process is complete then an announcement of the 7th Bishop of Waikato will be made.
