Life Flight transports 2 seriously injured trail bike riders

Life Flight transports two seriously injured trail bike riders

The Life Flight Trust’s Westpac rescue helicopter was called at approximately 12.45pm Saturday afternoon  to an accident between a trail bike and a quad bike at Karapoti near Upper Hutt.

Life Flight responded in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic on board.

The accident happened on a forest trail, some distance from the Karapoti car park, when a trail bike and a quad bike collided head on. A friend of one of the injured men rode approximately 20 mins back to the car park to gain cell phone coverage and raise the alarm. On arriving at the car park the helicopter crew were directed to the accident location using the park trail maps.

“Other riders who came across the accident had done a great job of looking after the injured riders and directing the helicopter to the crash scene” says rescue helicopter crewman Colin Larsen.

The helicopter was able to land about 150 metres from the accident site.

Two Wellington men, both in their early twenties, were seriously injured in the accident. Both men were treated on scene before being flown back to the car park where one was transferred to the Palmerston North rescue helicopter and transported to Wellington Emergency Department.
The second patient was stabilised for flight by Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics before also being flown to Wellington, by Life Flight’s Westpac rescue helicopter.

Both men are being treated for their injuries at Wellington Hospital.

The Life Flight Trust is a charity providing air rescue and air ambulance services. It operates the Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a nationwide air ambulance service. It relies on support from the public and sponsorship from partners such as Westpac to provide these services. Further information can be obtained from www.lifeflight.org.nz
