Navy Ship Escorts Those From a Bygone Era


HMNZS WELLINGTON will be part of a spectacular sight as 10 tall ships enter Auckland Harbour for the last leg of the International Tall Ship Festival this weekend.

The tall ships, led by SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND, will enter the harbour at 1pm on 25 October after a 15 day voyage across the Pacific Ocean. The tall ships have sailed from Sydney after taking part in the International Fleet Review in celebration of the Royal Australian Navy’s 100th Anniversary.

HMNZS WELLINGTON, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, will escort the ships into the harbour and then berth at Queens Wharf – Shed 10 for Labour Weekend.

A number of activities involving the crew of HMNZS WELLINGTON will be taking place over the long weekend.

Friday 25th October
1pm – HMNZS WELLINGTON escort the tall ships into Auckland Harbour and will berth at Queens Wharf.

Saturday 26th October
9:45am – the ship's company will march with the crews from the tall ships from the Viaduct Events Centre to the Cloud for a powhiri and prizegiving.

While HMNZS WELLINGTON is berthed in the city, the public are invited to take the opportunity to meet the crew and have a look over one of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s newest ships.

The ship will be open to the public on Saturday 26th October from 11am to 4pm and Sunday 27th October from 10am to 4pm.
