New regional council building open for business

Greater Wellington Regional Council will open its new building to the public on 9 December, with the first council meeting taking place in the new chambers on 12 December.

The council was scheduled to move to the new building at Shed 39, Harbour Quays , this month but brought forward its plans after the July earthquake compromised the stairwell in its former Wakefield Street premises.

Staff have been operating from the building since late August, but the regional council office has been closed to the public during the renovations required to ensure the building is fit for purpose.

“The regional council was originally scheduled to be moving into this new building in December, but we brought that forward after the earthquakes to allow council staff to retain full function while the new building was completed. A tremendous amount of work has gone into getting this building ready for business and we are excited to be open to the public,” says council chief executive David Benham

The regional council reception currently situated at the Wellington City Council building will close on Friday 6 December and will be resituated to the new building. Likewise, council meetings will cease to be held at the Te Wharewaka on the waterfront and will now be held in the new council chambers at Shed 39.

The new building will be officially opened with a short ceremony before the council meeting on 12 December.
