Wellington

On the morning of Sunday the 7th of December a 15 year old boy was injured during a school outdoor training program that was based near Tutuwai Hut in the Tauherenikau Valley - Tararua Forest Park - near Carterton.

The student was with a group of about 40 - Rudolf Steiner school students.

The boy took a fall and was knocked unconscious - he sustained a 100mm laceration to the top of his head.

Emergency services were alerted by way of a cell phone call - and mountain radio. Care was provided by those supervising the group.

The Life Flight Trust helicopter attempted to evacuate the injured boy but was forced away from the area due to heavy winds.

A Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic and Land SAR team walked into the Forest Park and spent the night with the injured boy.

He was flown from the park at about 8am this morning. He will require hospital treatment for his injury but he is not expected to be admitted to hospital.
