Council managing clean-up following latest flooding

Council managing clean-up following latest flooding

Christchurch City Council staff and contractors are continuing to manage the clean-up across the city and Banks Peninsula following the latest rainstorm.

Surface flooding is now receding and contractors are removing leaves from drains and sumps. This clearing will continue over the next ten weeks.

In instances of remaining surface flooding, drivers are asked to be considerate of properties adjacent to any surface flooding. The Council advises drivers to slow down when driving through flooded areas, as the wake your vehicle creates can send waves into neighbouring homes and businesses.

Geotechnical teams monitoring hillside areas
Geotechnical consultants are continuing to monitor known high risk areas where there is a life-risk potential. Following yesterday’s rainfall, teams responded to a number of calls throughout the Port Hills. Our roading contractors continue to respond to minor slips and are working to clear these. To date none of these areas have presented an imminent risk to safety.

Slips and flooding is being dealt with in Banks Peninsula. Contractors are on-site and continually monitoring and communicating with Council staff.
The Council is asking people in hillside areas to be vigilant, and keep an eye out for any telltale signs of land instability, including:
- New cracking to land, buildings, driveways or paths
- Existing cracks that get longer, wider or deeper
- Leaning or bulging of retaining walls
- Rockfalls
If you notice any changes, or have any concerns, please call the Council’s Customer Call Centre on 941 8999, or 0800 800 169. If you believe there is a risk to life, call 111 and self-evacuate.
