Generous Youth Recognised through Youth Spirit Award

Two of Waipa’s talented and generous youth were acknowledged tonight through the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award, with Courtney Field of St Peter’s School being named as the winner of the Award.

Run in conjunction with the Trustpower Waipa District Community Awards, the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award recognises secondary school students’ service to school and community.

The Award is jointly run by Trustpower and the Waipa District Council and all local secondary schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award. The runner-up for this Award is Rebecca Bryan from Cambridge High School.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award celebrates the work young people do to enrich their community and is open to all students who have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Waipa region.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award is a great opportunity for a generous student with a big heart to be formally acknowledged and congratulated.

“Since year 7 Courtney has immersed herself in a variety of sports including netball, tennis and touch but more recently she has added rowing and lacrosse to the list. Not only does Courtney play these sports but she gets involved behind the scenes and on the side-lines also as a coach and umpire.

“On top of this busy sports itinerary and her Deputy Head girl responsibilities, at her school Courtney is also a House captain, on the Youth Council, on the Student Executive and assist’s with various camps and activity days.

“She has also been involved in many out of school community service and volunteering programmes including through the Waipa Youth Council, for the Cambridge Tree Trust, volunteering at local the local Hamilton Half Marathon and she has helped knit wool squares for Romanian Orphans. On top of this she has raised funds for the charity ‘Shelter Box’ and in her school holidays she volunteered at the disability youth games.

“As you can tell this busy young lady with a big heart lends her time to a variety of projects and causes. She fully immerses herself in her school and it is an absolute pleasure to highlight some of her achievements through this Award,” says Miss Somerville.

For winning the Award Courtney will receive a trophy, framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group or organisation of her choice.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the Trustpower Waipa District Community Awards, being held at Te Awamutu College tonight on Monday 19 May.
