Stop means stop. Indicate your intentions.

Intersections controlled by a compulsory stop sign will be monitored around Upper Hutt in an effort to raise compliance with stopping and indicating.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 6 JUN 2014—Upper Hutt drivers are being reminded: “Stop means stop. Indicate your intentions.” during a road safety campaign that will run between 16 and 22 June 2014.

The campaign, run by Wellington District Road Police and Upper Hutt City Council, has been developed after monitoring showed at least 50% of drivers are not stopping or indicating properly at intersections.

“We will be targeting drivers who fail to stop at six main stop signs around Upper Hutt. These include Shakespeare Avenue to Whakatiki Street, Moeraki Road to State Highway 2, and McParland Street to Gibbons Street intersections,” says Wellington District Road Policing Sergeant, Rodger Hough. “Some drivers may feel that rolling through stop signs and making close calls at intersections is OK, but the reality is that taking these kinds of risks can result in serious injury or even death.”

At an intersection controlled by a compulsory stop sign:

• Come to a complete stop (do not just slow down).

• Stop in a place where you can see vehicles coming from all directions.

• Stay stopped until you have given way to all other vehicles, including cycles and motorcycles.

• You must not go until it is safe.

Road users are reminded that failing to stop or give way at an intersection is an offence. The penalty for this offence is a $150 fine plus 20 demerit points.
