Regional economic agency proposed – give us your views
Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington
Regional Council are proposing to set up a new economic
development agency for the Wellington region.
The new agency, to be known as Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA), would combine the existing economic development, tourism, venues and major event activities carried out by both councils.
Starting today (8 July), the two councils are seeking the public’s views on this proposal.
Combining these organisations means Wellington will be in a stronger position to compete with other regions for tourism, events and investment dollars. Combining funding streams and taking a more coordinated approach means more effective marketing for Wellington, through the Destination Wellington programme, not only as a tourism destination but as a great place to do business.
Chairperson for the Economic Growth and Arts Committee, Councillor Jo Coughlan, says the Wellington Region has many economic advantages but we could better maximise our opportunities for growth in investment.
“Wellington has high-quality services and facilities, world-class events and attractions, an educated population, respected universities and research organisations, and strength in areas such as creativity, high tech manufacturing and software/IT – we just need the world to know this!”
Deputy Mayor, Justin Lester says WREDA provides an opportunity for the region to raise its potential through a coordinated approach.
“Stronger economic growth will help to expand the rating base, reduce pressure on ratepayers and create investment in community facilities and services.”
