Swap the software for the saplings

Greater Wellington Regional Council is urging parents to get their kids out of their bedrooms, away from their keyboards and into the fresh air to join in two community planting day options.

“Community planting days are great events for families. They bring them together behind an excellent cause and provide parents with an opportunity to get the kids up close and personal with their environment,” says Queen Elizabeth Park Ranger Brendan Bulliff.

“They also offer a welcome diversion from slouching over keyboards and staring at screens, especially if parents get their kids and their friends together in a group and make it fun. “

GWRC needs all the help it can get to plant some 8000 saplings into the ground and on their way to becoming beautiful bush. It will soon be late in the planting season and the opportunity to restore and enhance native bush will be lost unless the community mucks in.

Organisations and business are also being encouraged to join in. The benefits of doing so are

many, says Brendan. ”The payback for business is clear, both in teambuilding and having the bragging rights to making a contribution to the community in which they operate.”

Each session lasts three hours, and morning tea will be served. However, people are free to come as they please and stay as long as they like.

Details

When: 09:30-12:30 Sunday 27 July and Sunday 24 August
