Northbound Waterview Tunnel to close overnight next week

Northbound Waterview Tunnel to close overnight next week for scheduled maintenance
The northbound Waterview Tunnel will be closed for three nights next week for scheduled maintenance work.

It’s the first maintenance closure since the tunnels opened at the beginning of July and is the first in what will be full closures every three months.

The northbound tunnel will close from 10pm to 5am on Monday 14th, Tuesday 15th, and Wednesday 16th of August. Detours are via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road and Great North Road.

“We understand that closing the tunnel will be frustrating for travellers who’ve already got used to the new route and improved journey times but ongoing maintenance is really important to keep the tunnel operating safely and efficiently,” says Brett Gliddon, the Transport Agency’s System Design Manager.

“We’ll be checking and testing the electronic equipment like the smoke detectors, fire hydrants and deluge systems which are required as part of the manufacturer’s guarantees and the building code.”

These are equivalent to the maintenance closures in place for the Victoria Park and Johnstones Hill Tunnels.

A map of the detour route is available on our website: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/projects/waterview-tunnel/waterview-tunnel-detour-map-may-2017.pdf
