Appeal following sexual violation in Queenstown

"Appeal following sexual violation in Queenstown"

Please attribute to Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron

Queenstown Police investigating a sexual violation at a residential address in the early hours of this morning are calling for help from people in the Fernhill area.

We are appealing to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the vicinity of the Mackinnon Terrace, Fernhill Road intersection between 01.30am and 02.45am this morning.

A male, whom the victim did not know, had entered her house while she was alone.

It’s possible that he followed her as she walked along Fernhill Road between Sainsbury Road and Mackinnon Terrace.

It is likely that the intruder has entered via the unsecured front door, before going into the victim’s bedroom and sexually violating her.

The victim reported that it was the sound of her phone ringing repeatedly that has spooked the intruder, who has then escaped the house by climbing out of a bathroom window.

The victim, who is being supported by her partner and has undergone a medical examination, did not suffer any injuries in the attack.

An assault of this nature is of extreme concern, not only for Police but the wider community.

It is very fortunate for the victim that the attacker has been scared off.

Police are doing all that we can to identify the person involved but we are asking for the help of the Fernhill community to find the person responsible as quickly as possible to avoid any further such attacks.

Police encourage people to be aware of their home security to deter criminals from entering into their homes where they can.
Check and lock your doors and windows before going to bed and, if you can, install an alarm inside and sensor lighting outside your home.

The victim has been able to describe the attacker as a dark skinned male of average height, with an athletic build.

She describes him as wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and speaking with a non-Kiwi accent.

Anyone who saw anybody of this description in the area between the times stated, or who believes they may know the person involved, is asked to contact Queenstown Police on 03 441 1600.

Alternatively, should you wish to provide anonymous information, you can do so by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
