Press Release: Norfolk ring barked and tree protester arrested

In an unexpected move, contractors have ring barked the 150 year old Norfolk pine at Snell's Beach this afternoon. Police surrounded the contractors as they undertook the ring barking.

A group of local women tried to physically intervene but were stopped by the police and threatened with arrest.

The tree protester, Charlie Cottrell-Jury, who'd spent the day occupying the tree to save it from felling, came down from his position in an attempt to halt the ring barking. Police grabbed Cottrell-Jury and pulled him from the tree.

Cottrell-Jury was arrested for trespass and is currently held at the Warkworth police station.

Cottrell-Jury believes he acted for the greater good and while he couldn't save the tree today, he hopes this actions will get people thinking about why the Resource Management Act needs strengthening.
