Police spokesperson:

Police and emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash north of Wellsford on SH1.

The crash involves two vehicles near the Te Hana bridge.

Two people have received serious injuries and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is en route from Auckland.

The road is currently blocked in both directions and diversions are in place.

Southbound traffic is being diverted through Mangawhai Rd and northbound traffic is being diverted through Matheson Rd and Waiteitei Rd.

The road is expected to be blocked for some time and motorists are urged to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
