Wellington starts Matariki celebrations with ReCut 5

Thursday 14 June

Head to Civic Square tomorrow night for ReCut 5 – a unique and exciting music, dance, and visual experience celebrating the start of Matariki.

ReCut 5 opens the calendar of Matariki ki Poneke events at 5.35pm on Friday with this free event for the whole family to enjoy – and the estimated 15,000 out-of-towners expected to visit the capital for Saturday’s All Blacks versus France rugby test.

“We want locals and visitors to the capital to really experience the vibrancy, flair and élan Wellington is famous for, and ReCut will definitely deliver that,” says Mayor Justin Lester.

City Events Senior Advisor David Daniela says ReCut is always a spectacle, and this one is no different.

“Some of the country’s top performers are involved this year, alongside some of the best of the capital’s local talent.

“Wellingtonians shouldn’t miss out on this experience, as it embraces all things Matariki – fire, whanau, and space. It’s very Wellington as Wellington is the creative capital, and ReCut is the very essence of that.

ReCut involves quick-fire acts but Daniela doesn’t want to ruin the surprise, so can’t reveal the nature of them before the evening.

“We’ll have cultural, we’ll have classical, we’ll have fire and we’ll have punk – it’s all very uniquely Wellington!”

ReCut begins at 5.35pm sharp in Civic Square on Friday 15 June. If it’s raining it will be postponed to Saturday. Check the WCC Facebook page for updates and postponements.

Following ReCut 5, Te Papa will host Matariki Hika Ahi from 7.30pm, which is the lighting of a ritual fire, stories of renewal and a celebration the start of a new year.
