Haumaru Housing celebrates first anniversary

Specialist social housing provider, Haumaru Housing, celebrates first anniversary

New Zealand’s fourth largest social housing provider, Haumaru Housing, will celebrate its first anniversary in July.

Haumaru Housing is an Auckland-based social housing provider that provides 1,400 affordable rental units for older Aucklanders. To celebrate the milestone, Haumaru Housing is hosting a series of special morning and afternoon tea events at its villages across Auckland throughout the month of July.

Gabby Clezy, Chief Executive Officer of Haumaru Housing, says: “Haumaru Housing is the only Community Housing Provider in the country that uniquely specialises in providing affordable rental homes for older people.

“This has been our first full year of operation, and we’re delighted to celebrate this important milestone with our tenants and joint venture partners.”

Haumaru Housing is a joint venture between New Zealand charitable trust, The Selwyn Foundation, and Auckland Council and provides safe, secure and affordable long-term tenancies for older Aucklanders who are vulnerable and in need.

Haumaru Housing Limited Partnership took over operation of Auckland Council’s Housing for Older People service in July 2017.

There are 62 villages across Auckland and more developments in the pipeline. In its villages, Haumaru Housing aims to create positive and inclusive communities that support resilience, connectivity and enhanced wellbeing.

“Haumaru Housing is as much about enhancing people’s wellbeing as it is about providing housing. We aim to create age-friendly communities, where social isolation and loneliness are eliminated, and also work to help tenants access the social, health, advocacy and budgetary advice services they need to improve their overall wellbeing,” says Ms Clezy.

As a New Zealand not-for-profit NGO, Haumaru Housing invests in communities, in terms of people and properties, retaining all surpluses to benefit older adults in local neighbourhoods.

The first of the Haumaru Housing anniversary celebrations will be hosted at their Kaumatua Court village on Te Atatu Peninsula on 2 July, to be attended by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.

Notes to editors:
Haumaru Housing is a limited partnership between the Auckland Council and The Selwyn Foundation that was formed in December 2016 to undertake comprehensive tenancy asset management services associated with the council’s stock of over 1,400 rental units for senior citizens, which are located in villages across south, north and west Auckland. Its vision is to see older people in affordable homes within communities that are safe, age friendly and caring and its purpose is to provide housing communities for older people in environments that support resilience and connectivity.
