Kapiti Urged to Splurge on Vegan

Inaugural Vegan Food and Lifestyle Expo set to impress

Crispy fried ‘chicken’, wild ‘Pulled pork' in spicy chipotle, Korean BBQ ribs, Chicko Satay and Berry-Lime raw cheesecake are just some of the scrumptious, mouth-watering options lined up to tempt locals at Kapiti’s first-ever Vegan Expo next Sunday (19 August).

“Plant-based food has become hugely popular and now positioned as the innovative, sustainable and ethical option for our future,” says event co-organiser, Yolanda Soryl.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see companies such as Air New Zealand, Z Energy and Domino’s Pizza announcing vegan options and vegan start-ups like Sunfed ‘meats’ thriving. The growth and popularity of veganism is also reflected locally as we were amazed how quickly local businesses booked sites to showcase their vegan options,” says Yolanda.

Nearly 40 food trucks, food stalls and cruelty-free retailers are set to impress Kapiti Coasters with their extensive range of tasty plant-based foods. “If you love trying international cuisine, brace yourself for delicious vegan food from all over, including Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Mexica, Samoa, Asia and even Venezuela,” says Yolanda. There is also a wide range of film screenings, talks and cooking demonstrations that will show just how easy it is to make vegan cheese and a lemon meringue pie.

”The Vegan Expo is a celebration of how to live compassionately with discovery and a taste sensation that won't disappoint,” says Yolanda.

The event follows similar sellout vegan festivals in Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch and Whangarei.

“We’re so thrilled to have Kapiti joining the vegan revolution. The Kapiti Coast may be small by comparison to Auckland or Christchurch, but this coastal region can now boast it’s within the top 10 New Zealand towns or cities to be hosting a vegan festival and that’s revolutionary.”
