Artists Armed With Wow Factor to Take Over TSB Arena

Artists Armed With Wow Factor to Take Over Wellington’s TSB Arena

Original contemporary New Zealand art will be in the spotlight once again when the 2019 NZ Art Show takes place next year over Queen’s Birthday Weekend at Wellington’s TSB Arena.

The show’s organisers announced today that both ticket sales and artist applications are now open and available on the show’s website – www.artshow.co.nz.

The highly anticipated four-day event will take place from 10am each day Friday May 31 to Monday June 3, and will be launched by the ever-popular opening gala evening on Thursday May 30 at 6pm.

Heading into its 16th year since it began in 2004, the event has grown to be the premier show of its kind, attracting more than 10,000 visitors each year and showcasing over 200 artists from around New Zealand, including some New Zealand artists who live abroad.

Carla Russell, the show’s Executive Director, says the focus of the 2019 show will be on quality contemporary art.

‘Over the last ten years, Kiwis have embraced the notion of owning original art with enormous enthusiasm, and this is reflected in the sales we see at the show each year,’ says Russell. ‘The art-lovers who come to the show will be expecting something new so we’ll be engaging artists with something fresh to communicate, artists with wow factor.’

Russell says that the main feature that set the NZ Art Show apart from other similar shows in New Zealand is the emphasis placed on excellence, professionalism and accessibility.

‘We’re determined, once again, to present an outstanding show, so we’ll be doing an intensive nationwide search for artists, including several highly regarded practitioners,’ says Russell.

Special highlights to look out for will be the recipients of the 2019 RT Nelson Emerging Artist Award, and the finalists for the People’s Choice Award sponsored by Brendan Foot Supersite, all of whom will be selected pre-show, on May 29.

‘Representing a cross-section of styles and techniques, the award winners and finalists demonstrate the best-in-show, and that’s what our discerning buyers are looking for,’ says Russell. ‘But I promise there will be something for everyone.’
