Wellington’s young people shaping their future

One hundred and fifty young people are taking the chance to tell the Wellington City Council what their vision is for the capital at a summit being held today.

Year 9 and 10 students from secondary schools across Wellington will be attending the Youth Summit, which is part of the Council’s project to develop a framework focusing on the needs of children and young people.

Deputy Mayor Jill Day, who will open the Youth Summit, says: “As our city grows and changes, it’s important we understand the views and experiences of our children and young people.

“They see and use our city in different ways to adults, and they have different priorities, and we want to take these into account as we plan for their future.”

Students will participate in interactive workshops on topics including transport, sustainability, community development, and participation in sport and recreation.

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet is also leading a workshop on the Government’s Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy.

Deputy Mayor Day says the Government’s vision is for New Zealand to be the best place in the world for children and young people.

“We want to play our part by ensuring that Wellington continues to be a great place for our children and young people to live.

“We encourage our rangatahi to tell us what they think, and the Youth Summit is an opportunity for them to get involved in the decision-making that affects their lives at all levels.”

Councillors will also visit schools in November and December to talk to children and young people about what they think makes Wellington a great city, and what their values and priorities are.

The outcomes of the activities will guide the Council on the development of their children and young people’s framework.
