On behalf of the people of Horowhenua, I offer our sincere condolences to everyone affected by yesterday's terrorist acts that killed New Zealanders in Christchurch. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and injured, the Muslim community and the people of Christchurch.

It comes as a shock to all of us that something so horrific has happened here in New Zealand. We trust that the strength shown by the Christchurch community during the Canterbury earthquakes will again come to the fore as they come to terms with these tragic events that have occurred in their city.

We recognize the commitment and courage of our police, emergency services, medical personnel and volunteer supporters as they respond to the situation. This event will change the lives of many New Zealanders and we must be strong in our support of each other going forward. Kia kaha to you all.

Due to the tragic events in Christchurch, following advice from the Indian community, Council has decided to postpone the Holi Festival event out of respect to the families and communities affected.

The Levin Salvation Army will open its doors at 7pm tonight for members of the public to reflect and come together.

Council will advise of a further gathering in the near future to commemorate those lost and acknowledge their families.
